Carrageenan: A Common Food Additive



     Carrageenan are a group of linear sulphated polysaccharides that come from edible seaweed. Carrageenan are used quite extensively within the food and beverage industries. Carrageenan have jelling and molding type properties.

Caarageenan is many times added to popular foods such as ice cream and yogurt. However, there can be some health risks associated with the use of Caarageenan. First, it must be noted that Caarageenan has absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever.

Caarageenan has been tested extensively. It was discovered that this popular additive can cause inflammation. Therefore, there is concern that ingesting large quantities of this additive can actually cause inflammation within the body.  

*Caarageenan: Possible Health Consequences: 

If in fact Caarageenan caused internal inflammation after ingestion, it could lead to more serious health problems over time. For example, Caarageenan could cause heart disease, dementia as well as Cancer.  

Caarageenan has been used by medical researchers to cause inflamed tissue so that new drugs may be tested. Therefore, this additive does have other value aside from being used within the food and beverage industry.  

Caarageenan has been proven to intensify an already diagnosed medical condition. Therefore, this additive has been shown to alter insulin levels in diabetic patients. In addition, Caarageenan has been known to produce severe indigestion in sensitive patients. Also, Caarageenan can aggravate bowel disease. Thus making the bowel disorder more intensive and much more painful.

 It is probably best to avoid Caarageenan completely. However, if you do consume foods with the additive, it is best to limit your intake of this potentially harmful additive. Like anything else, it may take a number of years before Caarageenan causes health problems.
